Information about the MAAI Modeling Convention

Is Everyone Accepted?

A: No, everyone is not. In order to keep our standards high and our reputation of excellence with the modeling agents and casting directors, a selection process is used. It may be in the form of an audition or interview with a member of MAAI.

Do you need experience?

A: No. An MAAI member will prepare you for the competitions.

Can I use my own portfolio of photos?

A: Often you can. That will be determined by your director or the member who is preparing you. Photos need to be current (not over one year old). If you are over 21 yrs., haven't changed your hair style, and still look like your photos, you can usually go two years before a new portfolio is needed. Your director will make that decision.

How much does it cost?

A: The cost of competing in the convention depends on variables which are determined by the city in which you live, how many preparation sessions you will need, your photo package, accommodations, and transportation. Most members have a package cost which is divided into affordable monthly payment plans. They also may accept credit cards plus you may arrange to get sponsors to donate monies for this wonderful opportunity. Look at it as an investment to achieve your goal of being discovered and possibly working for a large agency in New York, Europe, or Asia.

What does an agent look for?

A: Several things. First, a great smile and personality goes a long way. Second, attitude; one of determination, and knowing that it is going to be hard work and not just an ego trip. Also, talent or a great look, or just one that the agent knows he can sell to his clients.

What if I am not called for a special interview with an agent, will I still get to see them?

A: Most Definitely. You may choose to spend time with all these agents on Go See Day. You will receive a list of agents in attendance and what they are looking for. All you have to do is find their table and speak with them. This is your opportunity to show them your portfolio and give them a comp card and sell yourself by letting that special personality shine through.

How many agents attend MAAI?

A: Hundreds are invited each year. They come from all over the world. You'll enjoy intensive exposure to the most influential people in the industry.

What makes the MAAI convention different from all the rest?

A: We are the founders of the model/talent convention concept - 47 continuous years of successful conventions. There are several things we offer which make us unique:

  • Having a not-for-profit status, which means we are not a proprietary corporation which survives by making a profit.
  • Inviting celebrities and soap stars so you can have your photo taken plus speak with them.
  • Our elegant surroundings - the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel.
  • Scholarship awards program.
  • Exclusivity - we're not an overcrowded cattle call.

Is there anything else I should know about the MAAI?

A: The convention is usually held the Saturday before Easter until the Thursday afterwards (which is the day you go home) at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. A beautiful Easter brunch is held that morning with a professional fashion show, including dancers and singers for your entertainment. A fabulous Waldorf-Astoria dinner is given to you on Awards Day. These meals are a part of your convention package. You can even invite family and friends to join you at the awards banquet, at their cost however. After the awards banquet, an informal dance is held in the Waldorf for all the contestants to celebrate the week, the awards, the friends, the contracts, and opportunities they have received.

What should I expect?
1. Most conventions have large turnouts, causing the competition to be more fierce.
2. Many models may be much more experienced than you.
3. Many of the models will already have excellent portfolios.
4. There is no “one on one” contact with agents, that is just not possible at such a large event.
5. They can tend to be long and agonizingly brutal
